First, most important is early detection, i.e., screening and swift biopsies of suspicious or growing skin lesions. Many early skin cancers can be handled with simple treatments such as curettage and freezing. Excisions are also done at our office with excellent cosmetic results. We also offer early laser treatments to avoid scarring; more aggressive skin cancers need MOHs surgery or radiation.

As one of the most terrifying illnesses that we can get, cancer is a word that strikes fear into all of us. Skin cancer, specifically, is an uncontrolled and malignant growth of cells that form the basis for our skin. In the United States, more than two million people are diagnosed with its conditions, with an additional 76,000 being diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer.

It is something that comes in various forms, which can make diagnosis and fast diagnosis quite difficult. The three most common forms of it are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Each type can show up completely differently from one another and from person to person.

Typically, though, the most common signs are red bumps or scaly patches that won’t go away on their own, non-healing wounds, or red, scaly patches of skin that form on sun-exposed areas of your skin.

The main symptom that we will notice with this, however, is the new or changing moles that appear on our bodies from time to time. While these symptoms aren’t always a sure-fire sign of skin cancer, they are best to be checked by a professional dermatologist, can give you a more detailed overview of what could be the issue.
